Seed to Seedling

Growing a plant from a seed is incredibly rewarding, however it can be daunting for someone new to the process

Below is a list of steps that we take in order to achieve the highest success rate:

Anthurium Seeds germinating on wet paper towel

  • We start our seeds on wet paper towel inside clear takeaway containers with a few holes in the top for air exchange. We put a single layer of damp paper towel over the seeds.

  • Seeds are kept somewhere bright without being in direct sun and the temperatures are kept between 20 - 27 degrees C.

  • We keep the paper towel nice and damp until the seeds have germinated and produced their first root

  • Seeds/seedlings are then carefully removed from the paper towel, taking care not to break the root.

  • The tiny seedlings are then planted in small pots filled with a fine grade loose aroid mix, topped with some damp sphagnum moss

  • A small hole is poked into the medium to accomodate the root of the seedling. The seedlings are planted and watered in

  • Seedlings are kept in small miniature greenhouses until they are well established. This environment provides a very consistent humidity level for the growing seedlings and encourages good root growth

  • Seedlings are fertilised weakly, once a week, using organic liquid fertilisers

  • Once seedlings have a few leaves they are repotted into a slightly coarser grade mix. At this stage seedlings will begin to express their maturing form with every new leaf!
